CHARLOTTE, NC (August 26, 2022)—Morgan State wrapped up Day 1 of the Charlotte Invitational with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-17) loss to Campbell Friday night at Halton Arena on the University of North Carolina campus in Charlotte.
Makila Billingsley led Morgan State (0-2) with eight kills and Jourdan page added Sept. Alyssa Samson totaled 14 excavations, while Mackenzie Jefferson and Trinity Carruthers finished with 10 and 9 assists respectively.
Campbell (1-1) took a 10-2 lead in the first set. The Lady Bears responded with a 10-7 run, capped off by a Makila Billinlgsley kill to pull Morgan State within five at 17-12. However, MSU would not come closer to five points, the last being 19-14 after a kill from Melanie Battle. Campbell would close the set on a 5-1 push for the 25-16 victory.
The Lady Bears came out strong to start Set 2 and used a 4-0 mini run to take a 9-4 advantage after a service ace from Page. Campbell shot within two points (10-8), but Morgan salvaged two points capped by a service ace from Jefferson to make it a 12-8 game. That’s when the tide changed, as the Camels scored the next six points midway through a 9-1 run to take a 17-13 lead. Morgan State wouldn’t leave, as they’ve scored three straight to come within a point at 17-16, after a combined block of justus jackson and Billingsley. Campbell scored six of the next eight points to extend their lead to 23-18 and won 25-20.
In set 3, the Camels scored seven straight points to take an 11-4 lead. Campbell, who had his best set of the game in the third, recording 18 kills and hitting .389, increased his cushion to eight points at 19-11. The Lady Bears, who also had their best outing in the third set, used a 4-0 mini run to draw at 19-15. But that would be as close as they would get. Campbell scored the next three points and closed the set and match with a 6-2 push for the 25-17 victory.
Campbell was led by Chole Cook’s 14 kills, while McKenna Sciacca recorded highs in assists (16) and digs (17). The Camels would finish the game with .311 and registering 45 kills.
Morgan State will close the Charlotte Invitational on Saturday, August 27 against Wofford at 5 p.m.
