DOVER, Del. (February 26, 2022) –The Morgan State men’s basketball team soared Saturday, building a 21-point advantage against Delaware State, and managed to hold off 76-69 at Memorial Hall in Dover.
The Bears swept the season series with Delaware State, winning 82-70 inside Hill Field House on Jan. 30.
Malik Miller notched his fifth double-double of the season by finishing the night with a team-high 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Miller connected 8-for-15 from the field and went 4-for-6 from the boards to help Morgan improve to 10-13 overall and sit at 5-6 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference . Lake Grantsaan had 16 points and four rebounds, while Sherwyn Devonish added 13 points.
After Delaware State (2-23, 0-12) took an 8-2 lead, the Bears pulled off a 22-5 run, during which Miller scored eight points, including a dunk that put his team in the lead 24-13 at the 5:49 mark of the period. They would take a 13-point advantage at the break.
The Bears built their biggest lead of the night behind a 13-5 run. A Grantsaan lay-up extended the margin to 46-25 with 16 minutes remaining.
The Hornets responded with a 27-8 run and were able to pull it closer by two, with Morgan’s advantage shrinking to 54-52 with 9:13 to go. Myles Carter scored 15 of his 32 points (12-22 FG) during the run.
But the Bears responded quickly with a 16-7 run and a pair of free throws from Moore cut the lead back into double digits to 70-59 with a 62-55 lead with 4 minutes left.
Morgan made it tough in the backcourt for the Hornets all night. The Bears scored 26 points on 14 Hornet turnovers and recorded 10 interceptions.
Delaware State was outscored by Morgan inside the paint by a commanding 40-14 margin.
The Bears return home for a showdown with the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks on Monday, February 28. The game will mark “senior night” for the Bears.
