Nuno Fernandes takes over as president of America’s public university system

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va., September 1, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Nuno Fernandes officially assumed the presidency of the American Public University System (APUS) today following an event with faculty, staff and guests at the university’s finance center in Charles Town. Mr. Fernandes, APUS’ fifth President, brings deep experience aligned with APUS’ mission to educate adult learners from all walks of life.

Formerly President and CEO of Ilumno, Latin America largest online program manager (by number of students managed), Mr. Fernandes has led successful initiatives to improve student retention, student satisfaction, graduation rates and brand reputation at owned universities and partners of Ilumno. He also helped position the company’s former and current partner institutions as leaders in expanding access to quality higher education and becoming dominant online market players in seven countries.

  • Approximately 1,780 full-time and part-time professors**

Mr. Fernandes succeeds the interim president, Dr. Kate Zatz, who also served on the board for 18 years, more than half of that as chair of the board. APUS is grateful for the leadership and important contributions of Dr. Zatz.

Mr. Fernandes holds a Masters in Business Administration from WP Carey School business at Arizona State Universityand a bachelor’s degree from the University of Port in Portugal. He has also participated in several executive training programs in Harvard Business School and Carnegie Mellon Universityamong others.
