Punjab University employee found dead on campus, cops claim he committed suicide

An employee of the University of Punjab, Patiala, was found dead inside the university campus on Thursday, with police saying the man committed suicide.

Police say the body of Rohtash Kumar (28) was found hanging from a ceiling fan in a room at the university’s Waris Bhawan on Thursday.

Kumar, police said, had been working at the university as a mess assistant since 2016. He was from Haryana and is survived by a wife and a one-year-old daughter.

Investigators said they were waiting for Kumar’s family to take their statement and the body was sent for autopsy.

A statement released by the university on Thursday said, “It was an unfortunate incident”, and that Rohtash Kumar, who was a daily bettor, “passed away under mysterious circumstances”. The statement further states that cops from Urban Estate Police Station in Patiala were informed and took the body to Rajindra Hospital for an autopsy.

Professor Arvind, the university’s vice-chancellor, said a lost human life was the most unfortunate thing that could happen. “We should await the end of the police investigation before commenting on the reason for this extreme measure,” he said. The room where the body was found was sealed off by the university.
