Senior Urban Designer – Saint Louis, MO, US | Jobs


The Office of the University Architect (OUA) is seeking an experienced Urban Designer to work with multi-disciplinary teams on a wide range of project types, including campus planning, feasibility studies, and urban design at several scales (campus/site/building) .

The position is involved in many academic projects and initiatives on and off campus. The Principal Urban Designer ensures that projects are planned and designed to integrate and reinforce the surrounding urban fabric. The position works in conjunction with the Office of Real Estate, Government and Community Affairs and other units on outside issues impacting the St. Louis community.

A successful candidate will advance the University’s commitment to social equity, inclusion and accessibility through design. Additional responsibilities include ensuring project best practices, quality, schedule, code, and budget. An interest in placemaking and community design (building, street and public realm opportunities) is required.

Main tasks and responsibilities

  • Manages and coordinates planning, design and development with internal staff and external consultants to deliver plans and projects.
  • Develops long, medium and short term plans for future buildings and sites, ensuring that the needs of departments, districts and other stakeholders involved are represented.
  • Collaborates with University departments and stakeholders to develop project scope and budgets.
  • Gathers, interprets and prepares data and graphs for studies, reports and recommendations.
  • Prepares and communicates information and updates on off-campus projects to internal and external constituents.
  • Reviews and approves preliminary drawings and specifications for University compliance and departmental needs.
  • Manages urban design staff by providing day-to-day guidance and direction, assigning tasks, monitoring employee performance and providing feedback.
  • Manages multimodal mobility and transportation planning, including transit, bicycles, and pedestrians
  • Performs other assigned duties.

Work conditions

  • Normal office environment, usually desk or table work, repetitive movements of the wrist, hand or fingers.
  • Uses office equipment and the ability to travel to on and off campus locations as required.

Preferred qualifications

  • Master’s degree in urban design, architecture or related field and 10 years of related experience.
  • Previous experience in the field of urban design.
  • Additional certifications or licenses demonstrating commitment to continuing education in relevant areas.
  • A first experience in higher education is a plus.
  • Autonomous, responsible and mature person. Must be thorough and highly organized, with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal skills able to interact with a wide range of stakeholders. Sensitivity and ability to navigate group and organizational dynamics. Ability to communicate, present and maintain professional working relationships with a wide range of people and levels within the university, including senior management and end users. Able to adapt to a variety of styles to meet the needs of a diverse audience.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, active listening, conflict resolution and the ability to handle difficult and sensitive situations in a positive manner. Strong graphic visualization and presentation skills are essential for this position.
  • Must have a good working knowledge of the urban design, architecture and construction industry.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications. Able to work with and motivate design professionals and contractors.
  • Software skills including Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), AutoCAD/Revit and GIS required.

Qualifications required

  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture, urban planning, landscape architecture or engineering or a related field and five years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Understanding of 3D modeling software such as Rhino and Sketchup Pro.
