The Nigerian University Systems Rankings ranked the University of Ibadan as the best university in the country in its 2021 scores. In second and third place are Redeemer’s University and Covenant University.
The ranking of the Nigerian university system was highlighted in September 2001, in Nigeria, through the National Universities Commission which took the initiative of a national ranking of its universities.
This turned out to be the first of these rankings in Africa. There were three main drivers of this effort. The first was the desire of the population to know more about the relative position (performance) of universities and their programs in order to guide the career choices of future students.
Second, the government wanted a transparent and objective mechanism to identify centers of excellence to which the allocation of funds could be preferentially applied.
Third, the NUC, whose mandate includes the orderly development of universities, needed a basis to advise the government on programs and universities that should be strengthened to meet the country’s projected human resource needs.
Coincidentally, consultations on a World Bank facility to improve Nigeria’s university system were about to be concluded and the ranking of universities and programs was to be a key factor in the implementation of the project.
Overall, the atmosphere was ripe for a university ranking system. The 2000 national program accreditation exercise provided data derived from an objective and transparent methodology for the establishment of rankings.
Since 2001, annual university rankings by program and institution have been carried out. In 2004 and 2005, additional indicators were included in the data to align the national ranking with three global ranking systems: THE, Webometrics and ARWU.
In addition, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology; Federal University of Technology, Akure; Afe Babalola University; University of Ilorin; Babcock University; Landmark University and Edo University; made the cut on the list as the top ten universities in the country.
