UHD Staff Council

University of Houston-Downtown Staff Council President Caroline Smith and President-elect Tremaine Kwasikpui recently joined other leaders at the University’s System Staff Council Executive Council meeting. from Houston (USSEC) to the University of Houston-Victoria to discuss issues, resources and successes.

USSEC exists to support the mission of UHS by recognizing staff as an integral part of UHS, promoting UHS staff issues through positive and meaningful exchange of ideas. In addition, USSEC ensures positive collaboration between campuses regarding personnel issues and supports the need for system-wide personnel development.

Some common themes of the meeting evolved as representatives from the University of Houston Staff Council, University of Houston-Clear Lake, University of Houston-Victoria, and University of Houston-Downtown discussed the problems and possible solutions. The topics discussed were staff remuneration structures, career ladders and the intention of the UH system to develop a remote working policy. The meeting concludes with a group photo, a campus tour, and plans for a spring 2022 reunion hosted by UH System’s main campus.

“By working collaboratively with staff councils across the system, we can present a more representative and unified voice on the board. It’s great to see that overall the UHD Staff Council is a leader among our peers. The other campuses enjoyed hearing about our standing committees, professional development funding, and open relationships with the university president and trustees, ”said Smith.

Smith thanked the representatives of the UHD Staff Council in attendance, including Krysti Turnquest, Edith Arredondo and Tremaine Kwasikpui. Some representatives attended the meeting virtually through Microsoft Teams.
