Tedd L. Mitchell, MD, is the Fifth Chancellor of the Texas Tech University System and previously served as the Senior President of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (2010-2019). He was also previously President and CEO of The Cooper Clinic in Dallas, an internationally renowned center of excellence in preventive and sports medicine.
This year, the Texas Tech University System celebrates its 25th anniversary. There is perhaps no better way to commemorate two and a half decades of growth, partnership and success than by announcing the latest addition to our system. On September 1, Midwestern State University joined the Texas Tech University System as the fifth member institution and third general university alongside Texas Tech University and Angelo State University.
MSU Texas is an ideal addition to our list and aligns deeply with the goals and values ââof our component universities. They have a strong and respected history in higher education in Texas dating back to 1922, and since those early days, they have been committed to providing an affordable, accessible, and exceptional educational experience for their students.
But you don’t have to take my word for it. MSU Texas is the only university in Texas to become a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges, and they were recently recognized by US News & World Report on its list of “10 Public Schools With The Most Affordable Tuition In The World.” outside the state. . âWith students from 44 states and 54 countries, MSU Texas has extended its reputation far beyond our state borders.
These successes are due, in part, to exemplary leadership. President Suzanne Shipley may be retiring, but I cannot thank her enough for her service as the 11th President of MSU Texas. She positioned this university for future success and helped pave the way for their addition to the TTU system. We know that his interim successor, James Johnston, who serves as the university’s rector and vice-president for academic affairs, will continue to steer the university in the right direction during this time of transition.
This development of partnership with MSU Texas has been a thorough process. We intended to want a university with a well-established, tight-knit community that can partner well with us. We also looked for an ambitious university – and in this MSU Texas has nearly a century of evidence. What began as a municipal college located in a high school building is today a 255-acre campus with undergraduate and graduate offerings, as well as a student learning center located in Flower Mound. . With its research station in the Dalquest Desert and the Wichita Falls Art Museum, the university is the pride of Wichita Falls, a place that represents the best of learning, research and service.
And, of course, who could forget the athleticism and pride of the Mustangs? MSU Texas has a proud tradition in intercollegiate athletics with nearly 150 playoff appearances, 57 conference titles and 15 regional championships. In this, they will fit perfectly into our constituent universities which demonstrate excellence in the field and in the field as well as in the classroom.
Many people have helped make this partnership a reality, and my gratitude goes to Governor Greg Abbott, State Senator Drew Springer, State Representative James Frank and Members of the Texas Legislature for makes this union a reality. The vision and dedication to higher education and our great state by the MSU Texas Board of Directors, led by President Caven Crosnoe, and the TTU System Board of Directors have guided this transformational partnership. What has been achieved in the nearly two years of conversations and discussions has also been greatly endorsed by stakeholders and alumni of MSU Texas – thank you all for your support.
Part of our mission at TTU is to provide leadership and support services to our component universities in fulfilling the missions of our institutions. MSU Texas will celebrate its centennial next year, marking 100 years of educational achievement and contributions to its community, the State of Texas, and the world. I am proud that the TTU System family is sharing this opportunity with the Mustang family, and that our shared resources, additional synergies and shared values ââwill help extend the success of MSU Texas into their next century.
